Towards the fourth industrial revolution?
While we are still suffering the consequences of the great financial and economic crisis of 2007, some have already begun to talk about the fourth industrial revolution, driven by the Chinese situation and low oil prices. The crisis has taken millions of jobs, many other impoverished and a few have become very rich. Inequality is the greatest ever in history: the 62 richest people on the planet are the same age as the 3.6 billion poorest.
If it is true that another industrial revolution is coming, and there are signs in that direction, we know what its victims will be. That's the usual ones. Staff and citizens. The International Labour Organisation estimates that since the beginning of the Great Recession in 2007 there are 27 million more unemployed and that unemployment will continue to rise to 200 million. Davos has ensured that of the seven million jobs that will be lost in the next five years only two will be recovered, and that they will be, almost always, worse in quality.
We know that capitalism has no soul and business money has no nationality. In order to survive and continue to accumulate capital, the system will continue to close companies, relocate others, lower wages, precarious employment… In Euskal Herria we are already seeing some disturbing signs: The recently deceased AHV, the company ACB in the hands of Arcelor Mittal, will provisionally close for a year and then definitively. In Álava, Aernnova continues its policy of cutting hundreds of jobs. The multinational TRW is also prepared to put an end to hundreds of jobs in Navarre. Meanwhile, a lot of small and outsourced businesses are in death. This is only a part of the consequences of capitalist industrial revolutions.
