Beyond the music, The Amazing Nina Simone (2015) is a documentary that offers the opportunity to meet American singer and pianist Nina Simone (2003, 1933 – 2003, France). Jeff L. The film is directed by American filmmaker Lieberman (New York, 1947) and is based on the homonymous novel.
This piece by Lieberman is a biographical work about the musician. An audio-visual that adds an explanation to the words of musicians and songs composed by Eunice Kathleen Waymon (original name). To denounce racism and slavery in the United States, to reclaim civil rights and to scare away the personal ghosts inside, Simone was a strong and fragile woman who used music. This work makes a sincere review of his life through the statements of his friends and family, from the beginning of the character to his personal decadence.
Who doesn't know your songs My Baby Just Cares for Me, I Put A Spell on You or I Love You, Porgy? However, the creative process of songs and the driving factors are rarely observed. That is, to the personal experiences of the creator, to his emotional or ideological situation. For this reason, this type of documentaries allow entering the interior of the character and understanding the origin of this creation, as well as the silence it keeps. Simon wanted to become a classic pianist and use music to denounce the acts of racism he had suffered. According to the documentary, the mere fact of having a black skin prevented her parents from sitting in the front row in a recital of her daughter. Moreover, this passage would forever mark Simone’s complicated personality.
In the world of industry, their continual mood swings were known and many people recognized their fear: “She is a bit moody.” His brother Sam Waymon explains that he was a woman with very diverse personalities. For her part, Marie-Christine Dunham Pratt, the former girlfriend of the musician, says that there was no one in the world who could stay next to her for a long time: “Nina had too much energy.” Simon presented himself with mistakes and added that his biggest challenge was to manage that special talent that God had given him. Maybe he had become his enemy.
She married a daughter and didn't give her the supposed happiness. He often publicly stated that he could be happier and talked to his relatives about suicide. Unfortunately, under this strong appearance, fragility had prescribed and developed mental illness in recent years.
Despite the weakest moments of rhythm in the documentary, trapped by Simone’s unfortunate experiences, it is a delight to approach all the artist’s identities.
