You are rappers, but the fact of being in the neighborhood of La Viña, very linked to the carnivals, will influence it.
Before we always said rap, reggae and guasa from Cadiz. Some say we rap, carnival, reggae and I don't know what else. For us all labels are welcome. We also like chirigot, because there are people who use it as an insult.
Insult?
I do not know, they are things for the Spaniards.
Is it badly seen?
No, because chirigot isn't serious, and of course, we don't want to be that way. If you take us seriously, it's that something goes wrong.
The chirigot of the street will be your favorite.
Yes, but we don't use the rhythm of the chrisgot. What you do musically is a dub of romance or dubmancero GaditanceHall (laughter). One of the forms of carnivals is the Cadiz romance. The bottom line is that a person, with humor and rhyme, recites/pulls everything that happens in his/her head. Perfect for us.
You laugh a lot, you take your hair right and left, but you do it right.
Directly or indirectly. On the couch, eating a pintxo of cheese, on the stage we also throw away the same thing we say. It's compatible.
Where have you left the golden chains, the seras, the Machian letters …? We,
from the very beginning, have reneged on rap. Not by the rappers, we are fans of the original anglerfish. We renounce the stereotypes that have imposed on the rappers and the Rapari. They're extremely exhausting. In addition, the need to have so many visor occupies half of the washing machine.
When will you sign it with Sony and play in the Primavera Sound?
If you pay me today, I dare say yes! I didn't want to, but you forced me (laughter). Here it looks like you're a privileged one to go onstage. It seems that we do not have the right to leave or pay in social security. I am not referring to the overfat boxes of EUR 10,000 collected by these prefabricated groups. Nothing but a salary. Just like the servers, the musicians, the technicians…
Today, the search for one's own path seems indispensable.
We try to combine the way of life with the way of saying what we want. As long as we do not express ourselves, go ahead. FRAC makes no sense if you have an elaborate speech, it has to be instant. We were born in social movements, from the first second of the group we had to design our scene. We were still 20 years old and it was the best time of Teofila [who has been mayor of Cádiz for 20 years, of the PP], so we had to think about the option we had to play. The situation itself taught us to self-manage, to do things without money and to get spaces. Soon after we were 20-30 music groups, we created our own scene and moved more people than the official scenes.
You are part of the live music platform of Cadiz.
When we saw clearly that Teofila was going to be looking for tobacco, we joined in the line of live music that needs to be followed to make it easier for the new government. Among many of us we have pooled the main problems related to harassment or legislation. All the circuits that were not controlled by the previous city council died. “You’re with me or I’m commanding you the police,” they’ve put fines, they’ve arrested a lot of people, and they’ve accused us of being the worst, the city’s garbage. We're not drunk from the city. Well, there are some. But it's legal, isn't it?
How do you bring “change”? The change
in the City Hall is important to us. It's not essential, because there's real work in the street, in the collectives, in the bars, in the people themselves. The current mayor [José María González ‘Kichi’, Podemos] is a musician. He has been in a comparison of our neighborhood for many years with a very canyoning letter. It's a joy to find her in the street without being surrounded by gunmen. First it looked at a bodyguard and then at the Theophyll; of course, in the commercial streets for the rich.
Cadiz is one of the most unemployed areas in Europe, with a percentage of more than 40%.
If the situation in Cadiz was “good” – even if it is a fraud – unemployment never fell by 25%. The crisis was just a little bit more, but not a fortuitous clash in many other places. In the 1990s there was a decline in the industry here, due to the relocation of the shipyards. So by the time the crisis came, I was already used to the people of Cadiz. Since then, Cadiz has tried to live bad in tourism. It has been tried to promote a five-star tourism, which is actually a two-star city. Pretending, we've lived. For example, here it is usual to be discharged half day working in hospitality full-time. And you will also think, lucky that I am discharged!
But the fault is yours.
Of course, yes! Every day we are playing foals, singing in carnivals and charging PER (subsidy to rural areas) although we do not have land.
What would we be without stereotypes? The
overmarked stereotypes of the Andalusian, which necessarily has to be graceful, are the ones that come to us now on television. This malice, especially that of the Gaditans, comes precisely from the extreme need. And talking about double meaning is the same thing. For many years there has been great censorship here and that has been developed and integrated into the music and language of Cadiz. This is the real essence of Cadiz. Getting out of the TV doing the fool has nothing to do with all that. It's quite the opposite. I was blushing.
More than one of you will find it like screaming in the desert singing Andalusía Nasion.
Bah, don't think! In peoples, we have always been known for that song, that story and that movement. Of course, we know very well where we are and what environment there is. I believe that independence is not a priority in Andalusia. We are not talking about flags or borders. There are more Andalusians out there than here. We are talking about claiming identity. That we have our own history, our culture, our mugiro, our language, our way of acting and thinking and even our own repression.
