Left margin. The Government of Spain has made public the project of the so-called Southern Railway Variant, which will affect 2,700 workers. The aim is to train the goods arriving at the Santurtzi Superport. Despite having presented two possible tours, Madrid has explicitly opted for one, although it has acknowledged that it is the most expensive and the most impact it would have on the environment. The reason is that the priority alternative would link with the future high-speed line Santander–Bilbao. The project, which would cost EUR 310 million, would, among other things, facilitate the use of the Serantes tunnel (in the photo), closed since 2010.
