The photo is the mummy of Peder Winstrup (1605-1679). The body shows that the bishop of Lund (Sweden) suffered all kinds of diseases: cardiovascular diseases, gallstones, Forestier-Rotés disease, gout, cavities and, probably, tuberculosis. The fact is that his body was not embalmed, but has been naturally preserved in such a good state. According to Per Karsten, director of the Museum of History at the University of Lund, this was due to five reasons: that it was naturally mummified in the dry air; that it died in winter; that the bed for two years made it lose much of the muscles; that the aromatic plants buried with the body protected it from insects; and that the humidity and temperature of the crypt have been constant.
