As announced, for the first time an agreement covering all the countries of the world has been reached at the Paris climate summit. But what has been agreed is too vague. The mechanisms proposed will not be sufficient to meet the objectives set.
They have set an ambitious goal: Maintain “good” the increase in the earth’s temperature compared to the previous industrialization, and make an effort not to exceed the 1.5°C barrier.
It has been an indispensable condition imposed by the United States. Each country will have to submit to the UN its five-year plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but they will not be binding.
The triumph of oil producers has been not to mention “decarbonisation”. Instead, the objective is climate neutrality: balancing gas emissions with what is absorbed by forests and technological means.
