MONDRAGON, in capital letters?
I believe that cooperativism is the system that has the most potential to do business, to promote the development of the person and to transform the community. That’s why I care about your “health.”
After the statement, let's go to the top of cooperativism, to MONDRAGON; and let's focus on whether cooperatives remain a platform to carry out a transformative social project or have been limited to being more democratic companies.
To begin with, it has to be acknowledged that MONDRAGON has done very important things like a different and fairer business practice. But in recent years, and this is also true, it has come, above all, to do the “cooperativism” it has regulated, it has not gone through there. At the very least, this is what is perceived in MONDRAGON: a singular experience with little prominence and transformative ambition. Therefore, a peaceful cooperative experience that has a weak connection with the challenges of justice and ethics of this historical period. It is not a question of asking MONDRAGON for a solution to all the problems, but another level of leadership, a different presence in the search for a new economy and a new society.
It seems that Arrasate was a socio-economic alternative for a specific historical period. And, to put it in a way, in terms of social transformation, that's history. I believe that today he lacks seduction and proposals to mobilize people and connect with their illusions. Mondragon's cooperativism no longer seems to be a platform for social transformation. These dreams, if they develop somewhere, are now practiced in other fields. It is true, moreover, that the identity crisis has not only occurred to Arrasate. Many social movements of 1950 and 1960 know what this process of weakening is: the model has been frightened. He didn't wilt, but he did get scared.
Arizmendiarrieta said that “transforming people to transform the environment”. The global reference movement, which has as its axis the values of the economy, the community, the person, justice and solidarity, does not transmit it. In recent years, we have been teaching the biography of what MONDRAGON was: testimonies and history. An inheritance, a heresy, but an inheritance. And the goal is not to denounce Arrasate who does nothing, Arrasate long ago. It's about analyzing whether or not the environment is a transformation platform, or whether it wants to be.
It is undeniable that having a leading role and cooperative leadership would bring benefits to MONDRAGON and the Basque Country in business, personal, economic, community and transformation areas.
