The influence of the repetition of the same message in society is known, as well as the important role played by the media in this process. We are seeing this with the change in the economic cycle that began in 2007: in the last eight years there have been numerous attempts to make people believe that the worst has already passed through the official spaces. The media more closely linked to power have played an important role in the socialization of this message, although it is very questionable.
This is just one example, although quite significant, as on the cover of last week’s The New York Times they have also highlighted the case of the Spanish State in the report on the banking and government pressure suffered by the media. The U.S. Official Gazette basically says that newspapers have lost independence by not losing credit.
In Euskal Herria, the desire for a wide range of media interest groups has been known since before: political parties, economic and factual powers will always be tempted to mark in the media the editorial line they liked, even if they know that this hinders the sincere account of reality.
ARGIA wants to get rid of this kind of pressure. Our form of information is based more on principles that we believe are good for the majority than under the command of closed groups, and that much of the funding of this communication project is in the hands of our community guarantees our independence. To those who pay subscriptions, to those who financially support the work we do through the web Piztu ARGIA, to the public institutions, to our various advertisers, to those who drive this project from popular movements... To all of them we must, among other things, be able to work freely with information.
We decided to renovate the magazine because we are a medium that wants to offer something more to this community. We're looking for something that's deeper than just a change of image. We have adapted the way we work to better coordinate the content of the network and those published on paper. And we want the relationship with ARGIA supporters to be closer, among other things, from now on we will publish a weekly page called the Community.
We have a great challenge in our hands and from a young age we want to respond: in addition to the general economic crisis, we are immersed in the sectoral crisis experienced by the media. And besides keeping this project in Euskera, we want to make a greater contribution to the communication area of this people, giving it light by the margins.
