Rental of housing in exchange for social work
Bilbi plaza. Four and a half. Davide Angelilli, 24, accepts the invitation of coffee after eating. The young Italian spent the first year in the heart of San Francisco. He came from Rome to Bilbao to do the master's degree and joined the solidarity housing program. Housing rental with the help of the coordination of cultural and sports groups of the neighborhood, 55 euros per month. Angelilli is clear that those 55 euros attracted him to the program at first, although then the neighborhood gave him more than money.
In the bar of the plaza, on the skirts of the San Francisco neighborhood, with their mugs in hand, we see people coming and going, and you don't need to move anymore to smell the day-to-day life of those streets, the origin of every house, language, culture -- and status. A couple of groups of friends have also greeted Angelili and give us explanations such as “they work on the football team” or “they work in the association”. He sees it as important to work with these neighbors. The program, in addition to offering young people an affordable housing, aims to work with the citizens of this bilingual neighborhood. However, the edges are numerous in these areas. Angelilli, without losing importance to the program, has also been critical at times. He sees it more as an aid or scholarship for a course, and he has not noticed the intention to seek a real solution to the situation.
The idea of getting a house in exchange for work is good if change has general objectives; if there is an intention to act from small but large. At the moment, it is a program for forty-five graduate students from the Universities of Deusto and the Basque Country, with end of year expiration date. And as for social work, it often uses the word charity. It says that more than charity is needed if real integration is to be achieved; it is a step to favor charity, but always maintaining the social scale and power relations.
Hipsters setting the neighborhood
With the coffee paid, for which for now we also have some coins the precarious ones have realized the first hipsters locals as they climb the streets of San Francisco. In a few years, the neighborhood is undergoing major changes. The usual bars are closed and the cafes, the chic pubs are multiplied. It's fashionable. And the attitude is clear: they want to modernize the “conflictive” neighborhood. And what's fashionable is worth more. Students are also a beautiful hook for it. More and more students are choosing to go to San Francisco for university studies. Increase of the rent in the neighborhood. And Angelilli and I do not think it is a coincidence that the solidarity housing program is also carried out. Bringing students closer to the neighborhood, the streets take a different level.
Those on the street, however, will have to start moving to another remote place.
