The 23-year-old Oñederra had also realized that they were following him after knowing the disappearance of his friends. He was shot in the afternoon of December 19 at the Kaietenea inn in Baiona, where he was working as a bartender. It was the first murder assumed by GAL.Sus
parents, Pruden Oñederra and Arantza Bergara, living on Azkoitia Major Street. It's been 32 years since they lost their child: “We’ve been through galantas. That pain never happens,” says the father, humiliating his eyes. “And besides, they have not let it pass, there is always something, because they are terrorists,” adds the mother.
The young Ramon, who worked on the village chess team before fleeing to Ipar Euskal Herria, has been honored every year since he was killed. Pain does not calm down, but homage is a tender ointment every year, they do not say it, but they are noticed when talking about it: “Every year the chess championship has been held and we tend to distribute the prizes,” the father proudly says.
It's not easy to evoke your child's feelings over and over again, but your head makes your father tender: “After we died we had to bring the body to Azkoitia, village to town, on the main road. So it went to the border and many people made his son's last goodbye, as well as Monzón's wife [Telesforo] leaving the passage of San Juan de Luz. However, he reached the border and was abducted by the Civil Guard and transferred to Azkoitia.”
The murder was taken over by the GAL, the Spanish Justice began investigating the case, but did not reach anything. The Oñederra case opened in 1995 at the National Court and was processed by Judge Baltasar Garzón. Three senior security officials from Spain were charged, among others: Enrique Rodríguez Galindo, Andrés Cassinello and Emilio Alonso Manglado. Civil guards Felipe Bayo and Enrique dorado, belonging to the Intxaurrondo headquarters in the Guipuzkoan capital, have also attended. The first three were excluded from the case by the National Court in 2002 and one year later the case was filed, as the judge considered that there was no strong evidence against anyone.
Rodriguez Galindo, Bayo and Dorado Lasa and Zabala were sentenced for kidnapping, torture and murder and sentenced to 75 and 71 years in prison. For health reasons, General Galindo of the Civil Guard served four years in prison, while the other two civilian guards served six years in prison.
The Oñederra case was a matter of great prestige because of all this, and especially because in this program Baltasar Garzón tried to demonstrate that the famous X of the GAL was the leader of the PSOE, Felipe González: He wanted to prosecute the former head of the Spanish Government, but the Supreme Court rejected that attempt and ordered him to continue with all the charges.
When she talked about her son, Pruden's eyes were shining several times. But in the living room of the house of Arantza and Pruden there is sometimes a heavy silence. Did you have hope? “They began to investigate, but nothing,” said his father in a gesture of despair, “those who killed Ramon were civil guards at Intxaurrondo’s headquarters, but it was too big. As long as the pp is there, nothing will be clarified, and the PSOE did not have any interest in the text either. If they were!”
The shadow of Lasa and Zabala has also been on several occasions during the interview, and Pruden has taken a photo with them. And the movie about them? “We didn’t see it,” Arantza says, “and we were told to go and see to make no mistake.”
“It was said that my son had seven bullets, but the coroner told me that there were 10.” I had read in Interviú that they had brought the German ammo to Intxaurrondo. The trial confirmed that the bullets used were German and were not identified.
They have had the support of many citizens and, it is well known, they appreciate it. My father teaches me as a test of the pages that Maxixatzen local magazine or other publications have edited for years in homage. Keep them well wrapped in albums and bags. His longing for history helps him do that. “But you know, it’s been a long time,” says my mother, “and slowly he forgets, he blurs. And yet, a tribute is paid to the people and a lot of people go.”
Institutions have hardly approached the institutions in these decades. “When his son was killed, then President Carlos Garaikoetxea sent us a letter in which he gave us his condolences. When he was killed, the PNV he sent to the city hall did not allow the body to be deposited in the city hall.”
What would it be like for you to do justice? “At least know who he was,” Mother Blaust said. “And besides knowing, judging,” the father adds. “It was González,” the mother timidly concludes. I have also left on the table that the Basque Parliament and the Basque Government have taken steps in the knowledge of those who are not victims of ETA: “Yes, we have also received invitations and papers. There they are.”
Little hope for justice, but they want it. It didn't make any noise, but the mother went from the bowels. “Leaving a 23-year-old son without more… that hurts you!” My father has also escaped from within: "In addition, ETA victims cannot be compared to the other victims, they say. But do they have a different suffering?” Our mother says: “That hurts, more when you get older. When I was young, it was easier to take it all, now harder. Now anything affects him more.”
The questions are over. However, their action is not that of “the Byznets”, but they are happy with their face. And they follow their story. From deep sadness to a firm smile at one step. “It’s what’s there” left the victim’s mother in the air, in laughter.
