In the Sakana, in Malerreka, in Baztan, in Cinco Villas and in the towns belonging to the Basque Commonwealth of Iparralde, a total of 46 surveys will be carried out. Young people between the ages of 12 and 16 will be asked about the use of their homes, social networks, media and the use of the Internet. Castilian and Euskaldunes parents will have to respond to their relationship with their children under the age of 16; the transmission and use of the language will be the subject of a survey. The duration of the study shall be two years.
The municipalities of the Basque Country in the above valleys have acknowledged two reasons for conducting the survey. On the one hand, the Government of Navarra on the last socio-linguistic map has not provided data on populations of less than 5,000 inhabitants and in the Basque area of Navarre the majority of the villages are below that population. On the other hand, the sociolinguistic map data on the number and use of vascospeakers have created concern. The percentage of people who know Euskera has fallen by two points in twenty years (58%) and household use has dropped by seven points (34%).
