Last Sunday, the Tours Esku Dago initiative again showed its support, with tens of thousands of people on the street and claiming the right to decide. The claim was made again in a festive atmosphere, as in the human chain of June last year. And with a very specific objective, that at some point before it is late, the Basques should have the right to decide on the ballot box.
In addition, it has been pointed out that next year the target will be shifted to several locations: Dima, Ispaster, Hernani, Goierri Gipuzkoa… Now proclaim it and decide tomorrow. Last Sunday, the Modistos took various and different wishes in that direction, and now it seems that the time has come to put the pot on fire in the elected peoples in the next step. The results will be seen next year, but one factor for them to be good is the one that is at the base of Enti Esku Dago and that cannot be forgotten: to strengthen the citizenship and society so that those who believe in the right to decide, will inevitably put them in that direction. And that's going to cost more. It takes more strength than it showed last Sunday to put a whole people in that direction.
Among the shadows of Sunday is not having filled the bullring of San Mamés, Anoeta and Pamplona/Iruña. The Twitter hashtag bounced #baietzbostak. No, they have not been complied with, and Tours Esku Dago has to take that very seriously as well and draw conclusions. There will be many reasons, the time, the format, the objective too big, the suitability of the message, the municipal elections… The point is that it has not been possible to motivate and attract much of the citizenship that participated in the human chain last year.
The confrontation may be of key words in this analysis. See Esku Dago wants to bring together social sectors that have faced each other around the right to decide, both Basque sectors that have faced each other, and those that are around the Abertzale and Spanish dichotomy. All of them, around a democratic right.
That is what has reflected the process promoted by the ANC in Catalonia and, in a different way, also the process in Scotland. In Catalonia, the attitude of Spain closed and aggressive has been key to feeding the sovereign movement. In Scotland it has been the other way round, the SNP and its entire institutional environment have led the process and have led citizens to the right to decide. Despite the fact that many nuances can be made, the Catalan process has relied more on competition with Spain and Scotland more on the democratic culture of the British.
This British culture would suffice, but everything indicates that in Spain the scheme of confrontation will be more important in the future. And taking into account the models of confrontation that have been given in the past in Spain and in the Basque Country, it should be stressed that this competence must be fully democratic and civil, but confrontational. The new Spanish left could offer other prospects in the medium term, but today this possibility is still a long way off, even if the formula of the unity of the citizens for the forthcoming general elections were to materialise.
Major mass movements will continue to be indispensable, but more important than ever will be the decisions taken every day to nourish the right to decide to move in that direction. There are areas for this: In the self-government conference of the Basque Parliament, what place and what relevance will the right to decide have? ; How will the new Government of Navarre, for example, extend model D in the non-Basque area? The appeals lodged by the Constitutional Court are addressed to: ; With or without Udalbiltza, how should collaboration be carried out between the entities of the three administrative territories on very specific issues of daily life? A society that does not have the ability to channel a peace process that affects Basque society in full will be able to decide on its future?
Questions and fields can be put one after the other. If, in each and every one of them, the pressure of Cées Esku Dago and the citizens is felt, the Basque society will also decide at the ballot box, if not, hardly.
