In 2010 the book of stories was published Under the influence of the comet of Jon Bilbao, and four years later it has come to the Basque literature under the name Kometaren eragin (2014, Txalaparta).
The original edition has been praised for the rigorous and direct style of the writer and for the mastery shown in the treatment of a subject that is not always easy.
The last of the eight stories tells us that the passage of a comet has left an entire country without light. Through darkness, we talk about what the characters wouldn't do in a normal situation. In the belief that this story gathers the main thesis, he has been awarded the honour of naming the entire book: Do we have to be at the mercy of a comet to bring to light the darker feelings that lie inside us?
It seems to me a great metaphor for the comet to refer to the figure of a human being wandering waiting for extraordinary events. Because we do not have the courage on our own to deal with certain situations – for social prejudices, for selfishness or for unconscious fear – we are waiting for the right conditions to be met outside of us. “I’m one of those who attach importance to the signs” (page 71) will the character of the story The Incomplete Victory, recognizing that love for your partner is exhausted (do you want?) It can't.
Most of the narratives are written in the dente. In a strict and well-measured style of words, yes, but a tone of resistance is added that prevents further reading, an excessive abstraction.
Although the situations described are integrated in daily life, there will always be an unusual element of rupture with it, which works as a motor for the liberation of the most unlikely aspects of the characters. This intentional mirror technique places characters in an exercise of introspection.
It is far from mild in the influence of the comet. Most reports require careful reading so that the connection between meaning and meaning is essential. I recommend that you have a cool head to immerse yourself in this mental exercise.
