From there, it is difficult to get the forecasts right and, being realistic, it is hard to believe that the Basque public, so influenced by rock, can give the choice of a cocktail full of rimes and samples in considerable quantities.

In any case, in January we were able to obtain Eutsi from North Kodigo and Herrima from Suaia and Lahaine. The two of a very different nature: the first combines hip hop mainly with reggae roots, with an optimistic, sometimes humorous and introspective discourse, without, of course, forgetting to give wood to the Vitorian establishment. It is another Herrima, more electronic in the bases and militant in the speeches clearly, we already knew it before the album Grebalariak aske! is the clearest proof of this.

These are not beginners: Kodigo Norte has been in operation for ten years, and his colleague Gorka Suaia, accompanied by Endika Lahaine, the Barakaldés 121 Krew group, is on the stage. We can consider them from the same generation: They're the musicians who follow the gap that Selektah Kolektiboa opened up here.

New seeds

And yes, it is true, the hip hop groups that speak Basque have not yet managed to stop being marginal, but it can be said that they have created their own character. Without that you cannot understand the song Hazi berriak that the Biscayan Norte Apache of another group have advanced in May. They have presented it as a preview of the next album, but it is also more: it seems a claim of Basque hip hop made in the last decade, from the references of the songs made in these years to the humorous gesture of end of song. We observe who has collaborated and confirm the belief: The song has the collaboration of Jon Eyherabide from MAK and Manugaitz from Selektah.

This trend towards self-reference is not new, but in this case it suggests a certain maturity. The anglerfish in Basque no longer has to say that at some point it will be possible. It's there, hand to hand. The discs of the groups mentioned in this article can be downloaded free of charge. It just takes a little more people to do it and give it a chance.
