I put my students in this kind of doubt when we look for the definition of the documentary. As soon as the course begins, they have already claimed the adhesion of documentaries. Anyone who learns Audiovisual Communication, who tries to understand reality, likes documentary. Beyond everyday information or anyone who wants to know an author's point of view about reality, go to the documentary. That's the documentary.
But what is a “false documentary?” This year's students have had to investigate the blurry edges of the documentary in order to build a false documentary about them. How do you create a lie that's plausible? And what for? The exercise has been launched in search of strategies to achieve credibility. The documentary Operation Palace, recently produced by Jordi Évole, has highlighted the importance of the author’s fame and the name of the chain.
My students don't have a reputation (yet) or a chain. So they've had to use other strategies to make the fake: manipulated statements by experts, malicious use of real documents, abuse, polysemic images... The paths to construct the appearance of truth, whatever they may be, the false documentary is not just the entertainment of the whim. When we realize deception, it makes us reflect on reality. The choice of the subject therefore speaks to us of the fragility of what we know.

The fake comes from uncertainty. Or, in the words of Jean Baudrillard, from the hyper. After all, when we stop to look at the mobile screen of the most beautiful landscape, the picture has swallowed the reality. Maps of the territory. Selfies our ego.
