Engineers from NASA and the European Space Agency met in April in Italy to analyze the behavior of meteoroids and asteroids surrounding the Earth and assess the risk.
It is estimated that in the next 100 years, about 500 of the millions of bodies around the Earth could enter the Earth. The risk is small, but it exists.
What to do, for example, against a 100-meter diameter asteroid? Researchers have analyzed two possibilities: on the one hand, the creation of spatial obstacles that alter the collision trajectory, and on the other hand, the nuclear explosion in the asteroid.
Both are difficult, as the speed of these bodies exceeds ten kilometres per second. For the time being, the first thing that researchers have agreed on is to track more thoroughly the trajectories of asteroids and meteoroids. Because decision-making on empty assumptions is very expensive.
