TTIP, threatening our rights
On 18 April, several demonstrations will be held on the occasion of the day to combat TTIP, also in Euskal Herria, which threatens our fundamental social rights and the environment. The Agreement on Trade and Investment between Europe and the United States – the English acronym is TTIP – is a treaty being negotiated between the US and Europe to “increase investment and trade, realise the potential untapped transatlantic market and generate new economic opportunities, generating jobs and growth, improving market access, unifying regulation and marking the direction of global standards”.
The agreement is being negotiated with a great deal of obscurity, as it seeks to conceal what the United States really wants to impose: deregulation of trade and investment relations in order to broaden its philosophy in Europe. In this way, those who run politics, industry and finance will have more power and more power. After all, what the United States is seeking is to cut labour rights, as the US Government has only signed two of the eight conventions of the International Labour Organisation. It seeks to limit the right to labour representation and lower salaries, as well as to privatise public services and justice, leaving investment issues to private arbitration. From an environmental point of view, the agreement would facilitate the entry of GMOs and eliminate the bans on the use of fracking, achieved by social movements in different parts of Euskal Herria. This will be of vital importance to our agriculture and to the environment.
If we fail to stop the dynamic against society and the environment that the United States wants to impose, the immediate future of our rights will be deadly. Let's see if citizenship realizes what's on top of us. To create that awareness, social movements, trade unions and politicians have a great responsibility.
