The old Idurre Zugazagasti and Haritz Ugarte eat lots of seasonal and indigenous vegetables. However, they don't buy it at the supermarket. Every Tuesday afternoon they pass through Antitarrak society, where they are awaiting a basket with all kinds of food. Both are part of the self-managed group of consumption Old Otarrak, which has already carried out five years of activity.
The consumption group consists of 30 baskets per week, each of which owns an individual, a couple, a group of friends or a family. To this end, contacts have been established exclusively with small producers, through assemblies and following a number of criteria. What is most appreciated is naturalness and organic farming.
Producers bring food to the association without intermediaries and members of the consumption group take charge of the distribution of food. To do this, two members are distributed every Tuesday: they take the food and put the food that corresponds to them in each basket. In the words of Zugazagasti: “This work only corresponds to us three or four times a year and in return we collect weekly local organic products.”
The basket is closed, so you plan all year round what you are going to ask for. “We know when we will pick up the eggs, when the cheese or the tomatoes.” As a result, producers have the opportunity to organise and stabilise their work. In addition, they pay the baserritars one month in advance and undertake to pay the same if they ever spoil the harvest. “Fortunately, nothing like this has happened to us at the moment.”
They say that they have not had to make any financial effort, as the quota they pay every month does not exceed what would be spent if they were bought in the supermarket. According to Ugarte, “the only adaptation you have to make is to get used to eating seasonal produce.”
The motivations that have led them to participate as members of the consumption group are many: to help small local producers, to promote another consumption model, to buy healthy products… Each member has its priorities, but through the assemblies held every two months and making common decisions, they have managed to create a common project.
In addition, they are just one more active agent in the neighborhood. The festival program includes annual activities and the purchase of one kilometer of the Korrika. In order to bear the witness, one of the producers has been invited to fill their baskets.
Thanks to this type of initiatives, it is observed that in the Old Age they are increasingly known. However, they have decided not to overcome the 30 baskets barrier to continue acting horizontally as before, and although there are many people who want to join the group, they have to register on the waiting list. “To be able to manage it well, it’s better to have many small consumer groups than a big one. In the neighborhood there is another new group and see if they soon form more”.
