The following message has been disseminated via Facebook: “‘I like the 50 shades of Grey...’ A feminist would never say that.” It made me angry. Is it possible to be a feminist and enjoy the trilogy of the 50 shades of Grey? I haven't read the books, I haven't seen the movie, but the answer is clear: yes, round. According to what I've read, history is based on sexist roles. The BDSM (bondage, art of tying, games of superiority and dependence and sadomasochism) is not in itself sexist, the problem is the continuity between the roles of erotic games and everyday life. The relationship of Anastasia and Grey is completely unbalanced: man is older, has extensive experience in sexuality, economic power; girl, student, virgin, txolina. So Grey's dominant role goes beyond the bed.
Being a feminist guarantees to identify this lack of equality and to think that this relationship is not exemplary. That is why it is so important to disseminate feminist analyses of successful cultural products. Ianire Estébanez was able to shine with the films that eventually adapted Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. Rather than trying to keep young girls from watching those movies, let's help develop their critical ability. So, when you look at the 50 shadows of Twilight or Grey, you won't identify with Anastasia and Beauty, you won't make Grey or Edward his blue prince, you won't think that because you're a woman, you have to fulfill the role of addiction and satisfy men's fantasies won't be your main erotic goal. Studying successful films, series, books and songs is an awareness-raising exercise for equality, an effective way of talking about toxic love relationships or symbolic violence.
I don't like intellectual elitism. Most people use best-sellers and junk TV to rest the brain. If I see silly series, the verdict that I'm silly seems to me to be a bluff. Big Brother VIP and Who wants to marry my son? Programs such as Euskadi Radio have a lot of audience, also in Hego Euskal Herria. Rather than saying “Instead, see documentaries”, it would be more effective to give the keys to understanding the damage of these sessions and to disseminate other success models that prevent the aim of young people’s lives from becoming “tromists” of Women, men and vicevers.
On the other hand, as far as the demand for this intellectual orthodoxy is concerned, I call for contradictions. On my Twitter profile, following Emma Goldman, I say: “If I can’t do it in perching, this is not my revolution.” Hobbies are varied and complex. It's true: I like to dance reggaeton, batxata, hip-hop and arin-arin. That doesn't make me a feminist or a music lover. I like the rhythm of reggaeton and I think that this irreverent way of dancing is ideal to relax the relationship that we Basques have with the body (ours and others). As a feminist, I realize that many letters are insulting. The solution? Select songs with non-sexist lyrics (if any) or mock them.
And rather than living in an Orthodox bubble, let's think of Grey's 50 shadows why the film has created so much expectation. For example, let’s take advantage to publicize non-sexist pornography created by BDSM feminist or by women. Let us not turn feminism into a single club, to strengthen it as an attractive movement rooted in society.
