Rock, in its broadest sense, is a very changing and unbalanced field for thousands of reasons. In the same way, the sustainability of projects that make up more than one person is a complicated task, as many interests, needs and personal circumstances condition their survival. Even more so if it is difficult to tell or touch what the project gives the participants in return. You have to give a lot for the project to last and the motivation is multiplied to improve the outcome. In the field of music there has been much mention of the existence of specific styles – slower in rhythm and intensity – which, despite the years, make it possible for the result to be the same. And not the rest.
Anesthesia has a lot of those thoughts, but with its existence and its practices, it belies a lot of things. Although they are about to turn 27 years since the group was created, each time they go onstage, in all of them, they transmit the same illusion and motivation as in their beginnings. And it seems that the passage of the years has not affected them in any way by force, energy and firmness; I would say that, on the contrary, they are firmer and wilder today. I would also say that the three creators of the group, Mikel, Dani and Beloki, do not age, but that is part of their secret.
Anesthesia is a machine that is not affected by anything from the environment and from the outside, but by its clock, its hunch, its calendar and its own feeding. News is the sixth feature that they have published these days, nine years after the publication of Therapy, Circle a spiral (Actions Bonberenea). During this time they have performed four or five concerts in the places, conditions and environments they have wanted.
By chance, the face and referent of the group is Mikel Kazalis, who before the birth of this project created the Stygia group, precursor of thrash-metal in the Spanish state. Subsequently, his trajectory was interrupted and Kazalis, along with the two friends mentioned above, published the crude models Brain Anesthesia and Morality, sung in Spanish by Mikel himself. But for some problems he had to stop singing. Meanwhile, Fermin Muguruza signed up for the Negu gorriak project, which was about to be born.
By then, Anesthesia had already recorded songs in Euskera in the same place the album edited with EP, Hardcross and esan Ozenki. From there, the enormous work of the Zarauztarras to socialize thrasha, metal and hardcore became public and the collaboration with Esan Ozenki was very long. Gorrotoaren ahotsa (1993), Atera (1995), Gu (1997) and Ultrakkomunikatzen (2000).
Kazalis has interspersed the trajectory of Anesthesia, the most important and the most appropriate, with other solid projects (Negu Gorriak, 2Kate, Kuraia and Avería) and along the way they were joined by the beast singer Ibon, but Anesthesia has always been there, like a column, never taking a step back. This is also the last work of the Circle to the Spiral, without fissures, that makes the essence of thrash come to our days, making it stronger and stronger with death, hardcore and grind, but also more open in style than ever before.
