Two concepts to convey the spirit of these lines: Self-organization in Education and Basque Cooperative School.

With a slight situation, the 1960s was a very rich time in popular construction. Proof of this are the initiatives that emerged at that time in the Basque world. Other initiatives are also one-off: cooperatives mainly. All the self-made movements from civil entrepreneurship.

At the origin of these initiatives various motivations emerged. But did they share some common distinction? It can be said that the clearest differential was one of the self-regulation conducts. Therefore, as for the identity of the ikastolas, the most significant element to characterize it was also self-organization. This characteristic was at the origin of the ikastolas – intuitively and inevitably – it is in the ways of doing, in the culture, and it is destiny: in the north there is a person who is organized and a society.

They also had another raw material that any social movement needs: to connect with collective dreams. What were those illusions? Transmission of the Basque, transfer of the Basque to a strategic area, awareness of the Basque Country, response to oppression through projects, autonomy, educational innovation and proposal of an alternative to the church and the model of the State school.

In addition, trust is needed to carry out self-organization. In oneself and in your environment. This confidence in the ikastola must be given at three levels: at the institutional level (cooperative constitution), in management (working independently and making decisions) and in pedagogy (with a pedagogy that fosters trust in the person). Wow! Today's psychology and pedagogy sciences have confirmed to us that the idea of cooperative self-organization was very good.

The organization of people and projects is very topical. And why? Because it is interesting that the decision is in the hands of the protagonists, because ownership implies responsibility and this entails the tension necessary to seek quality, because autonomy is gained, because cooperation is practiced, because more mature people are developed, because efficiency in management is gained, and because democracy and the vocation to transform society grows. This practice has been very ours and effective, and we have a culture of it. In this way, we will be more prepared for any scenario that may appear in the future.
