Athens, a clear example of the crisis. The urban landscape and the character of citizenship are more gloomy, more abandoned and darker than ever. Half of the population of Greece lives in Athens (picture below), but after the crisis in the building capital, many have returned to rural areas. Athens is also at the centre of the major mobilizations: in the photo above, one of the protests following the approval by the Government of some of the austerity measures, in the Syntagma Square of the capital. In this case, the violent spectacle left many affected by the violence used by the police, tear gas and the dangerous chemicals that were detected. The third image is that of Athens. Aggeliki and his son Alexander have the time to leave the house as they have been fired. Aggeliki’s husband, who left three years ago, does not have enough money to pay for the rental of the apartment.
Contrasts to the eye. Tourism and tourists are an important source of income in the Hellenic country. In the image below, the island of Cephalonia. The privatisation of the beaches allowed 110 Greek beaches to be sold last year. In contrast to the image of the postcards, prostitution and trafficking in women exercising it have increased in Greece. According to the NGOs, some 13,000-14,000 people are victims of this trafficking in living beings that is taking place in the CAV. Women come mainly from Russia, Ukraine, Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Nigeria. The second picture below is that of Ghana, a victim of prostitution and trafficking in human beings.
Punishment for immigration. His name is Fares, he came to Greece from Syria, fleeing war. A month after his arrival, he was brutally beaten by an extreme right-wing group, among others. Many immigrants have been assaulted and murdered by supporters of the political party Golden Dawn, which rules in the Gaza Strip. In the image below, Aggeliki's transport cards show the money he's left in bureaucratic accounts to get papers for him and his son. Although her son was born in Greece, he has problems with the administration as parents of Moldova and Pakistan, as do many Greeks.
Greece 1975. The country began the year as a republic, three weeks earlier, in the referendum on 8 December 1974, after the citizens decided on the end of the monarchy.
A decade earlier, in 1964, when King Paul I died, his son Constantine took the throne at the age of 23.
