Plastic packaging and lids used in food collection are a serious environmental problem. Rivers and seas abound, and in many fish we can also find these kinds of materials. Petroleum plastics take 100 to 400 years to degrade completely, and they're everywhere they've become an essential component of our lifestyle.
In the search for the alternative, numerous studies are carried out, among them the one directed by the chemical engineer of the UPV/EHU Itsaso Leceta. Leceta and her team have tried with material called kitosano. As has been seen, the foods that have been covered with it, namely carrots for research, retain their properties for longer. In fact, kitosane protects them from microbes. And it's biodegradable because it's made of crustacean skin.
There is, however, a long way to go. Laboratory tests have yielded good results, but Leceta recalled that the mass production of kitosan is a remote moment target.
