Born 17 September 1788. In the afternoon, Austrian troops began to reach the city to confront the Turks, allies of the former in the war between Russia and Turkey. The Army was composed of about 100,000 members from many countries. Serbs, Croats, Romanians, Poles, Hungarians... Few people understood the language of the Austrian officials, German.
At the forefront, a group of husars was sent to inspect the area where the crowd would camp. No trace of her enemies was found, no more and no less than a Gypsy family that sold alcohol. They decided to buy some barrels and, before the first soldiers of the Romanian infantry came to the confluence, the Hussars had been drunk. And they had no intention of sharing how little was left of their liquor with the Romanian thirsty. Incomprehensible with his words, they began to hit hard. In the middle of a discussion, someone shot in the air. The arrival of Austrian officials at the time was not favorable; “Stop! Halt!” (Geldi! Stop!) When they started screaming, the soldiers seemed to say “Allah” and, believing that they were Turkish Muslims, they set their superiors on fire, who responded in the same way.
It was the picture when the cavalry came. And according to all appearances, the soldiers decided to attack those who were enemies. When they saw the horsemen assault, the infantry troops, who were still arriving, thought that the horsemen belonged to the Turks. And, of course, they had caught fire.
For several hours, Austrian troops dispersed in small groups, where the suspected enemy shot everywhere, causing several shots. But the more shots, the more fornid the fantastic Turks. And in the end they had to flee.
Two days later, genuine Ottoman troops arrived at the campgrounds of Karansebes and found 9,000 skulls.
Many historians question that the battle of Karansebes was really like this. On the one hand, they acknowledge that it is collected from many sources and that the sources are consistent. But the first mention of the battle was made 40 years later in an Austrian magazine, and the most reliable sources were A. J. Swift-Hoffinger received the news almost 60 years later. These time intervals inevitably lead to distortion. Hold on as well.
