“It’s a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” Last year it was 200 years since the publication of the original work that began. 19 years ago it was first published in Euskera with the following start: “The truth is that it is universally accepted that a single man, possessing a great fortune, needs a wife.”
In an interesting preamble by the translator Ana Isabel Morales, we will learn about Austen's main literary contribution: “His modern way of teaching the novel the scrolls of ordinary people in their everyday lives.” He started writing from a very young age, as far as this book is concerned, published his first version of First impressions at the age of 21 and 27 years later with the title of Pride and Prejudice. It makes us a portrait, or cartoon, of English middle-class and upper-class families of the 18th century.

To do this, it is very important to comply well with social standards, as well as having money, beauty and virtue, of course. And that's what I think is the charm of this book. Austen seeks a balance with her female protagonist, Elizabeth Bennet. It will comply with the rules necessary to be admitted to society, but it will not change its personality. She is willing to accept marriage as a life project, but she will not take the first option presented to her if she does not satisfy her. She will give what is expected of her role as a woman, but without losing sight of her style and her criteria. Austen will use humor and indirect style to launch the theme “reason vs. emotions” on these pages, highlighting the complexity of the characters and showing that the “first impressions” are wrong, as the person who from the beginning we think is proud is not always and only so, and the same happens with the person who has prejudice.

In the editorial he began his work almost 20 years ago by translating this book of Austen, “with the aim of bringing out the silenced voices, with the objective of putting in Basque tools of thought written by women and in works that make a contribution from the gender perspective: because the name is what it has and because the important thing is to make the network”. With this objective we recommend this classic and also with another objective, so that, as those who speak the language and culture of Austen say, we join, at least for a moment, the “slow food” and “food for thought” thoughts.
