The submarine had no future.
The Dutch inventor Cornelius Drebbel (1572-1633) built the first submarine in history. King James I of England hired him as an inventor and Drebbbel tried to make the members of the British Army understand that this type of underwater craft had a great future.
The inventor had picked up a fishing boat, put a wooden deck and wrapped it all in greased leather. The device was operated by twelve remers who used a respiratory tube.
The first underwater voyage of the unique boat took place on the River Thames in 1620 or 1621 and reached a depth of twelve feet (approximately 3.6 meters). It seems that the king willingly accepted the demonstration, but the British Army did not find any military use of the device, so the Drebbel initiative took three more centuries to move forward.
