"I've run away from stereotypes."
- A year after Zuloak's last concert, Tania de Sousa presents her first solo album: Tania Tank (Talka Records, 2014). The former Zuloak singer has done an eclectic and varied job, without losing the rock tone, but with a bold jump to the field of pop, contrary to what some expected. His intention is to stay for a long time in the music scene.
With the album Tania Tank you have started your solo career, what is this presentation like? Did you find what you were looking for?
It's very hard to find what you're looking for, but I think I'm closer than you're looking for. I think it's taking my sound out, my voice is how it is on the record, no artifacts. I've also broken the boundaries in music, because I dare everything, and for me it's a pleasure.
It has had unique collaborations: Mursego, Mikel Aizpuru, Koldo Soret, Xabier Solano, Fermin Muguruza Most musicians know them well.
Yes. The truth is that these kinds of collaborations give color to the work. I've been very lucky because people like that have been with me. Because they're extraordinary musicians, and because songs take another dimension.
With this album, has it been revolution or evolution that has happened in your musical career?
It is clear that in my trajectory there has been a very big change, compared to what I have done so far. I've had the freedom to take that leap. In the end, because I've run away from some stereotypes and realized my sound.
Although the project is yours, you have also formed a group for this album with Maitane Alonso (bass), Fermin Bouza (guitar) and Ander del Sol (drums). What was your contribution to the album?
Fermin Bouza has been instrumental in this album, as I happened to him when I composed my songs. He worked them and gave them the last sound that you hear on the record. On the other hand, Maitane has a very special style when playing the bass, mastering the technique and having a great presence on the stage. Ander is very elegant, gives wood to the battery. I think we have created a very nice group.
You've taken the step from the punk rock to the pop-rock, the voice also has a different treatment, it's a melodic.
Yes. As I mentioned earlier, it appears without hints. I finally found my site, I don't need to force the voice, which is my voice. I have a pop voice that I must reinforce.
The year has passed since the last concert of Zuloak. During that time, you've had time to publish two albums, one with The Dispositives, and now this solo album. Creativity has no crisis.
Well, don't think, I struggle to compose songs, or value what's OK. For me, it's a huge effort to get good when I do something. The artist has to do a mediocre job until he creates a song that is worth it.
Tania Tank has been edited by Talka Records. It looks like it's your natural place. Fermin himself recommended that you follow your route alone.
Yes, if I hadn't really had that support, I don't know where it would be. It's clear that the projection I'm having is because of Fermin and his team, and throughout my life I'll only have a thank you for them.
As a musician, where do you look in a few years' time?
I hope to keep making music. It's a very difficult world, and it's all going to get worse, I'm pretty pessimistic, but well, hope is the last thing you lose.
