Economic catastrophism and independence
The Scots have been able to decide that Scotland is still linked to the United Kingdom and that Scotland has not cast a vote. Despite the threat from Madrid to prevent consultation, the decision of Catalonia will come at some point, also that of Euskal Herria. The attitude of governments, international organisations, banks and large companies and their media terminals can come to some conclusions, both for Scotland and Catalonia. The same conclusion would apply to the Basque Country.
It is precisely the argument against independence used by governments, institutions such as the IMF, big companies and their media that an economic catastrophe is going to occur. They have thrown heavy artillery, without shame, into manipulating it, to say that it will affect the stomachs and the daily lives of the citizens, to vote against independence. The catastrophistic arguments are that if independence is achieved, the country will be isolated; the economy cannot resist; large banks and companies will leave the country; pensions will have a worse quality of life; pensions will not be maintained; the European Union (EU) will not accept new segregated states from another state; “we will be more united, more tolerant and more imaginative than separate” (The Economist); etc. But there are a lot of contradictions. So, for example, in the case of Scotland, would the EU want to lose the wealth of this country by leaving out the club? Scots have 20% of fishing stocks, 25% of potential renewables and 60% of oil.
All this proves that, basically, those governments, those institutions, those companies and the media are afraid of democracy. There is nothing easier and more democratic than letting citizens decide on their future. Without economic and social catastrophism. No manipulations or threats. With total freedom.
