In the early 1980s, those of us who were in the Light, I guess we were like topos or bats, as if we were in caves, entrenched, isolated, semi-blind. It was inevitable, because most Euskaldunes at the time thought that the Basque press was not worth it, that the future was the press to call it bilingual. We lived, then, like in the caves, because every time we went out in the street to have coffee or snack, we heard voices everywhere saying that we were in vain.
Soon after, when we started organizing Day of Light, we could say we started coming out of the caves, or at least we tried to do it. It was an attempt to consolidate and multiply the unique but stubborn and unwavering supports that we had had until then: Beasain, Elgoibar, Deusto, Pamplona, in my naked memory. Once a year, we started going out on the street to listen to people, some of us quite nervous.
In short, I would like to recall the year 1990, when, among other things, Euskaldunon Egunkaria was set up thanks to the impetus of Argia Eguna. So we had a long and complicated discussion to see if, being a newspaper, it was worth going on with Argia. The course of the resolution is clear, the proof is in your hands. I do not think that many people today question the reason for that decision taken almost twenty-five years ago. Fortunately, Argia follows here, a panorama of plurality that the Basque press did not even believe in its dreams.
In Argia you can read unolorous themes and approaches. And that is a lot, but there is something else: thanks to the relatively small business structure of the weekly, from the headquarters of Lasarte-Oria, which has long ceased to be a cave – in addition to press contributions – there is an opportunity for a more horizontal organization of society and its structures, an option that is being exploited by the current work team. I believe that there are not many of us who follow carefully the contributions and reflections that come to us from this group, whether men or women.
