Death of Santi Auzmendi
Things are forgotten too easily. We must not forget Santi Auzmendi. He died on 22 May, a 73-year-old Lazkao tailor, a neighbor of Lazkao, who was running through the streets almost until the day before. We had fun because he called himself “Auzmendi. Tailor”, but he wasn’t too fashionable. In 2006 he told Amets Arzallus some opinions and fragments of his life. But anyone who has known the Basque press in the 1970s knows of Auzmendi for a long time. He will remember those advertisements by Zeruko Argia (style of San Sebastian): how many put ads in Basque in 1977, in the midst of the transition after Franco’s death, the abertzales have to eat the world, but, in Spanish – “we will gradually introduce the Basque Country until everything is done in Basque” and even today – without inventing the concept of public subsidy, nor the General Council! ), a handful of friendly workers and collaborators plus faithful readers and four cats of advertising support. In 1980 it was handed over to the workers Zeruko Argia, the new cooperative that had until then been the most Capuchin, summed up the name of journalist Argia. The workers were facing the worst crisis so far, as a bank lacked credit or money to buy paper for the printing of this weekly.
