On that occasion I did not read anywhere the plan to dismantle the plant after the closure. In France, and in other European states where nuclear power is of great importance, the announcement of the closure of several plants coincided with the emergence of doubts about dismantling and ignorance, as so far no nuclear power plant has been completely dismantled. In a single similar precedent, since, after dismantling several parts of the plant, it is intended to convert the radioactive material container and its entire environment into a mountain that covers land and lasts for several centuries. Yes, a mountain that no one will be able to approach during all this time.
Endesa has been in favour of the opening of Garoña, and we will soon know Iberdrola’s opinion, probably also in favour of opening up. It will be used as an excuse for the regulatory change made earlier this year by the Government of Spain. Nowhere will we read the problems of the closure of the nuclear power plant, nor the enormous amount of money that can be spent on solving the serious problems that arise after the closure, nor is it much cheaper to make the necessary investments and move on.
Garoña will open again for ten years, and I believe that in those ten years we will learn more from what we know about how to deal with radioactivity in Fukushima. During this time, more experience will also be gained in France in the field of dismantling power plants.
I am not in favour of nuclear energy and at the moment my wish is for Garoña to disappear as soon as possible, but if I close at this point, Garoña will stay almost forever with us, and it may well disappear sooner in ten years’ time. I want to close Garoña with my heart, but what is the best time to do it?
How to close Txernobyl? How to close Fukushima? These two nuclear power plants, after suffering accidents, are still "alive" and no one is calling for their closure. The first has been covered and covered, and the solution has been entrusted to the technological advances that the... [+]
