Puritan feminism
We were born into the world. Before we learned the names of the colors, we were dressed in pink, and before we learned how to walk, we had a doll in our arms. Protected at home, a warm, warm, stupid childhood of ours. The “literature for adolescents” led us to the other side of the world. We read the women and the five, and in the two we admire the mute girls who hated the orders and duties of women: Jo March and Kirrin became the model of George on the island, so “other us”...
As a young man came the political and ideological analysis. We were taught that the world was built by men, and when we turned 15, instead of dressing white, we went out into the street to claim that the body was ours. Feminism told us everything we had before, we learned that “personal is political.” The day-to-day life of each of us could change the future. Too much interest for the simple necks: we rebelled against what we had promised until then.
We are imposing new rules. The purple replaced the rose. In the eyes a black line was allowed, but it was forbidden to paint red the lips or nails, it was to submit to the desires of men. In the days of the Levis jeans, we wore a skirt, but very long and very wide; tight clothing or short skirt meant not being aware enough and living under machismo. The woman who moved the butt above the high heels and thin we took it as a slave to the desires of men.
Every politician, every changing and revolutionary. For sexual freedom.
We brought our daughters and sons into the world. Then came the first surprise: when non-sexist education was going to bring new and free men and women, our little boy was doing a whole hammer, and our little girl was doing a whole doll. The next surprise came before we went in search of balance to conjugate the feminism of equality with the feminism of inequality: “Mom, do you think I’m sexy like that?” We were left open: “Sexy? How is it sexy? What is sexy?” Sexual freedom and sexism yes, but sexy?
And at the time, we realized that we had permission to be beautiful and delightful, but not to be sexy. We had sailed in other waters, at great speed, and it would not have caused such unbridled joy.
