Salaries and employment
The Abertzale trade unionism has sent a message in which it has advocated increasing wages and improving job creation. ELA and LAB, for their part, have announced a campaign of mobilisations in the framework of collective bargaining to achieve a wage increase above the CPI. Both unions have stressed that in recent years there has been a drastic reduction in wages in the Basque Country. They denounce the employers who continue to opt for wage cuts in line with the IMF guidelines, which aim to devalue labour costs by 10%. Trade unions have rejected the employers' message that lowering wages creates jobs and that "only greater business benefits are achieved". They say that employers are taking advantage of the high rate of unemployment and precariousness they suffer, because they frighten workers and accept lower wages.
With wage increases, there is a greater chance of creating more jobs; social benefits would be improved and public revenue would be increased. If there were greater purchasing power, consumption would be reactivated, the risk of deflation, which is the enemy of growth, would disappear and wealth would be generated. Raising wages above the CPI would therefore increase consumption and require more economic activity, more labour, less unemployment. There would be more people quoting social security and paying taxes with which social aid would be guaranteed and improved. In this context, it is important that the gender pay gap should also be included in this debate. According to some estimates, the gross wage of men in Hego Euskal Herria is 7,217 Euros higher than that of women, while men pay 33% more.
With the same ideas as the two unions, it would be appropriate to join together in moving this debate to business and society, as well as in convening social mobilisations.
