Artificial pancreas instead of insulin
In Europe, more than a million people should receive insulin every day. Since these people’ s pancreas does not produce enough insulin to dissolve their body sugar, they should take it by injection.
At the moment there is no alternative to bodily insulin injections, other than pancreatic cell transplantation, but this route is used in very few cases, as it generates great complications. However, a pathway of hope has recently been opened for patients, as explained by Hervé Pichon of the French technology center CTTM: the artificial pancreas.
The device consists of a square bag of ten centimeters of side, with live cells inside. It is inserted into the patient’s stomach and can produce the insulin needed throughout his or her life to release the person who has received the injection bondage. For the time being, the tests have been carried out on animals and the result has been very satisfactory. By 2015, the first attempts to test humans have been announced.
