The well-known Italian artist and historian Giorgio Vasari first used that adjective towards 1550 to describe an exceptional set of works of art. It was not, therefore, an insult that knew little about art, but the opinion of an expert. Vasari's intention was to draw attention to the brutality of Gothic forms.
The Gothic term means “of the Goths”, with which Vasari wanted to express that the artistic style was that of the barbarians, of the peoples who were engaged in looting and destroying everything they found, of the peoples who had no interest in seeking the perfection and beauty of the classical works of ancient Greece and Rome.
Vasari was unsuccessful in his criticism. By then, the Gothic was already spreading across Western Europe and, without wanting to, soon lost an insulting tone in the style that it hated so much.
