This latest work by Pello Añorga and Jokin Mitxelena summarizes from the beginning a well-known tale by Perrault: “In a mountainous village, a girl lived with her mother, her father and her grandmother. And as I always walked with some red shoes, and I always talked with his red shoes, they all called him ZAPATAGORRI.” If someone hasn’t caught the story at this start, just go to the next page and here: Read “And it is that there was also a FEARSOME WOLF in that mountain town” and soon we will come to the head Txanogorritxu, red, wolf, girl… Of course, Añorga and Mitxelena offer us a new version, different, a four-legged wolf that has become two legs, replacing the innocent Caperucita by the living girl today.
In the narrative it is evident the rhythm that the writer usually uses when narrating stories, how he plays with words and where he places his strength through the use of capital letters. Along with this text, we also have images that, through the good use of color, bring us from colorful images, black landscapes or red and terrible places in the forest to home sweetness.
Zapatagorri enters the forest and entertains himself and loses like in a well-known story; then, in the forest, he is captured by a wolf: “The fearsome wolf stretched the claws and trapped it. What an animal was a terrible wolf! What a savage! What a denture!”, but the girl faces the wolf and then throws herself into flight.
The story has a happy ending, as in the version of the Grimm brothers, and as in many classic stories it occurs with an apprentice, explained before, almost hidden… realizing the wolves of our environment: “And they were all shocked: shocked. Indeed, then they realized that this terrible wolf was not an animal, but a MAN. They had realized that they had undressed. Oh my God! It was not a wolf, but a MAN, a child thief! Children's bandit! Malefactor!” and in this sense, in the initial version of Perrault, the girls were told to take care of men, bringing them closer.
This shoe maker is a new and different version of Caperucita, which plays with it, which brings it… and a work that plays with the reader, with our expectations; a very interesting book by Pello Añorga and Jokin Mitxelena, which merges tradition with the world today.
