The Winged Cat is one of the few comics published in Euskera. In that sense you will be happy.
Yes, unfortunately, very few comics are published in Basque. However, Sauré is an editorial that publishes only comics and usually publishes them in several languages. The winged cat has been a custom job, a commission that was writing a narrative book. In addition, it had specific conditions, besides the number of pages, because it needed stories: a cat, classic works of art and a museum where the cat would come in. I brought those ingredients into my field, turned them into me when I wrote the script, to write like it wasn’t a commission, free… Then, everything that Joseba’s drawings did, and for me it was very satisfying to see the script drawn, because through that world created by him, he managed to set it up properly. In the comic book, visual is essential, if that part had failed, even if it had been published, I would have felt a failure.
A bookstore in Paris, a cat brought from Zuberoa... What are the main narrative strands of comics? In a
library in Paris, there's a cat with wings, but they're wings that have no more than skin extensions, no skeletons that allow it to fly. But for a library client, it's a real winged cat that can fly. The comic tells you the obsession of this Louvre working client with the cat, a cat that can fly. The Louvre worker, at the beginning of the antagonist, soon becomes the protagonist, almost with the cat becoming an excuse, to tell the story of a man seeking an obsession or a dream.
In what genre or how would you classify the Winged Cat?
Although I would like to avoid classifications, before I wrote them, the characteristics (cat, works of art and a museum) that I had previously established for the argument pointed directly and without a doubt to me the territory of mystery. It is a field that reason cannot understand, but that sensitivity can perceive. And this happens on two levels: on the one hand, because those characteristics are the ones we've mentioned, and on the other, in the case of the cat, who has wings. On the other hand, the Louvre worker personifies precisely a man who “understands” beyond reason, or that part of the human being, who perceives that there is something else, who buys the books of Edgar Allan Poe. We see Annabel Lee reading poems...
The editorial Sauré has published it in Basque and Spanish. Will the Internet save the comic book?
It was a surprise that the comic book was only published in digital format. The paper version will be published later. It's a pity, because most of the comic book makers are collectors, and we think it's essential to have in our hands a piece of paper ... An enlightened story, a graphic novel, the charm of comics in general, is something else on the screen. It is complementary, it is not a substitute for paper, I think. And although I'm also a constant user of the network, I don't think the network is going to save anything; at least in this country, the author is not going to save us today. In the case of the comic book, and in the case of the general edition of the book, neither. In recent years, the sale of digital formats has increased slightly, contrary to expectations. I think the paper world will follow next to the digital world, the two of them are present. Maybe. Who knows?
In other countries, such as France, the comic book has a wider market. Has he not studied the possibility of translating into French from his location in Paris?
This, in our view, is an absolutely appropriate and reasonable option. We would love to see the French version of the Winged Cat competing for the breadth of the French market. It would be like swimming in the sea, typical of a particular fish ... But for the moment, the editor wants the fish to enter our well. And because the fish is in your hands, be it.
I don't know if saying metalytherapy is to say too much, but Edgar Allan Poe has weight in the script. Have you been recognized with this work? That
was not the conscious intention of the principle, but, in line with what I said earlier, driven by pre-established elements, I saw myself almost involuntarily within history and I mentioned a fragment of Poe's poetry, Annabel Lee. So, yes, confess to Poe, and also to the moon, and to dreams, in the sense of quotation. After all, it would be a recognition of all the irrational; a totally objective and rational reality in which there is no animal subjectivity, it seems to me that of the world lame ...
You’ve created the comic book together with the CARTOONIST Joseba Larratxe Josebisky. What has the exchange been like? Before we made the winged cat, we met to work together on another project, which has not yet ended, by fantastic coincidences, and from the very beginning we have had the connection for creativity. The Winged Cat was to be elaborated by a Madrid cartoonist, but later it was delivered by the editor to Joseba. Luckily. In the script writing process, therefore, there was no relationship, I wrote it without knowing who was going to draw it. The script was, of course, very accurate, as it was written from one window to another, from one page to another. Joseba, by drawing, adapted the ideas she wanted to adapt and set the story, the comic became a reality! I am simply grateful for the work you have done.
