Despite being a powerful giant, Prokusto was a friendly host who always offered his best iron bed to travelers staying there. However, his kindness ended with the offer: as soon as he lay down, Prokusto tied the traveler “with a short and heavy chain”, as Benito Lertxundi said in the words of Joxan Artze. If the traveler stayed longer than the bed, Prokusto, with the saw and legs cut off, pitifully raced, while when the traveler was smaller than the bed, he grabbed the poor devil by both ends and threw him on each side, until he reached the same height of the bed.
Listening to and reading the excesses that have been said and written these days in these countries on the occasion of the Strasbourg judgment, I can only think of our Prokusto and I am sure that the giant here understands democracy as bad as kindness, or even worse.
It is true that the Franco-Africans, who had taken refuge in the basements of the main party, are barking more and more shamelessly, but that is, in my view, the least. The speech by those who insist on saying that this sentence is dangerous to democracy and offensive to the victims seems to me to be a thousand times more dangerous than the ugly bark.
Those who have so far claimed that democracy and the law in force are the same thing, are precisely those who are now in favour of not admitting this judgment. They've now realized that laws are not always good, that sometimes it's a way to consolidate democracy to go against the law. Make a retrospective review of what is being said in relation to the judgment, and consider, among others, the following two laws: The Spanish Constitution itself, on the one hand, and the Political Parties Act on the other.
Anyone who does a good review will have to admit that these laws are very similar to the Prokusto bed. The Constitution, that law of all laws, when it suits some more sacred than the Bible, was drafted as it was written, that the drafters continuously felt the cold (and sharp) of the sword on their back, and the sword commanded what should fit in that common bed and what not. Later on, some who should not fit learned to adapt to the size of the bed and became legal. Before that, the others decided to make the bed smaller, and that is, in essence, the Political Parties Act. Consequently, everything (and all) became ETA, through a law created for that purpose to circumvent the law.
As for the victims, although I tried to do so, I do not understand the reasoning of those who say that a political reason must be given to the victims, especially seeing that some victims (and not the most victims) deny their status as victims to those who do not share the strategy of revenge until destruction.
A system that uses undemocratic means to oppose those who want to destroy democracy is as large as they seem to want to destroy, both here and in Guantanamo. It seems that the Strasbourg judgment has made Spain the realm of stress, and it is a pity, because it was an unbeatable opportunity to accommodate the sentence and bury in the Valley of the Fallen all the Beds of Prokusto built for years on purpose (or, better still, burn them there along with the remains of the buried and spread them to the four winds of oblivion).
