Ladies and gentlemen, with you the Queen of Noise. Thus the members of Runaways were presented upon their arrival in Japan in 1977. Singer Cherie Currie was 18 and guitarist Joan Jett 19. Queens of Noise is one of her songs, Cherri Bomb and Born to be bad, which were constantly heard in radio formulas.
In September the Zuloak group offered a special concert at the Teatro de la Arteria in Bilbao, with a series of concerts organized by Izar and Star Herri Irratia. Zuloak's girls reversed the songs of the legendary Runaways band on that occasion, as on the last concert on 27 September. The Cherri bomb or Joan Jetten I Love Rock and roll was the best reception point for the public. But there is no equality between the two groups, although both are made up of young women. We are currently in the 21st century, and Zuloak is not the Basque Runaways, a group of teenage women in California in the 1970s. Zuloa's are also young, yes, Ainhoa Unzueta was 19 years old when the film was shot. Zuloak has been a small revolution in the Basque music scene. Until they appeared there was none of that and from now on it will be difficult to see anything like that. Attitude, provocation, pride, insolence in the display of the red panties, musical instruments strongly agitated by women...
The Runaways group was founded by American producer Kim Fowley in 1975, within the Zuloak association of Fermin Muguruza. Similar experiments are common in the music industry. Bring together the women who have taken from here and there and create a laboratory group, especially because women’s groups have always been a good business. Novelty is present.
This is also the case of Zuloak, as they are musicians intentionally attracted by several groups: Tania de Sousa is a singer of The Dispositives, Ainhoa Unzueta guitar of the Itzalen group, Naiara Goikoetxea is drummer of The Sfinters, User of the Ursula Fountain was drummer of Strong Las Culebras and Izaskun Muruaga Lights of Eden was a singer of the group. We are all known today for being part of the Zuloak group.
In the film Zuloak, the singer of Vulpes screams: "I could have been Zulu, too." Because there have been many women in this last year. In fact, the film directed by Fermin Muguruza pays tribute to Basque women: Anari, Aiora Renteria (Zea Mays), Marieder Iriart (The Sparteens), Maite Arroitajauregi (Mursego), Aida Torres (Jupiter Jon), Africa Arrate Rodríguez, creator of the essence of Bideak, has interviewed several women from Euskal Herria, along with her camera, to talk about this project. Most of the protagonists of the film are female musicians. It is not usual, as those who work in scenarios, informative or in different areas of music are almost always men. As noted in the film by Jota del Kafe Antzokia's technician, 95% of the musicians who go through the stage of this room are men. 95% of the musicians that appear in this film are women.
More women than expected in the Basque rock
Germany, Mexico, Argentina, Lithuania, Cuba, Poland and Japan, among others, have been the destinations of the tour that the Zuloak group has made this Saturday. Following the presentation of the film at the San Sebastian Film Festival, Zuloak addressed Tania de Sousa (voice), Ainhoa Unzueta (guitar) and Usua de la Fuente (drums) on this great and long tour.
On the other hand, Zuloak's girls have continued their projects. Tania and her group, The Dispositives, have published a new album. Usua and Koldo Soret (Surfin Kaos) have created the group Niña Coyote and Chico Tornado. As we saw on 27 September in Gazteszena, volume and force are present in this new project.
Ainhoa Unzueta, Zuloak guitarist, has been captured on her return from Japan. Today he is 21 years old, but at 14 he took the electric guitar for the first time, after having studied classical guitar. He's young, yes, but he's been playing guitar for years. Apart from the Zuloak project, Ainhoa has begun to learn, to compose. It has several projects. “We’ve learned a lot, it’s true, but we’re looking forward. It’s the end of a project, but this has created and strengthened other projects.” After two years I would like to make your own album. “The tour has been an amazing experience, we have been very well received everywhere.”
We ask him if he has already learned almost everything he has to learn: “There are still many things to do, things need their time.” Yes, rock and roll brought Zuloak, it will bring many more things. The Zulues have died! Long live Los Hoyos!
