According to an international study (Randstad Workmonitor, the keys to labour market expectations over the next five years), nine out of ten Spanish workers believe they “require more than five years”, but 94% say they “are willing to do anything not to lose their jobs”. These results are a sign of the dramatic situation in which the fear of losing the job forces workers to perform tasks that deteriorate their health, to the point of putting their lives at risk. It is well known that cuts in many areas have forced workers to work faster, resulting in precariousness and a worsening of working conditions. It is detrimental to occupational health (depression, illness, suicide…) and also to life, as evidenced by fatal accidents at work.
Thus, it is no coincidence that in the last three weeks eight workers have died in occupational accidents in the Basque Country. It is clear that as a result of the cuts, more and less work is done, as many people are trapped by precariousness. It is clear that the cuts kill. It is clear that capitalism and its reforms kill it. It is clear that Governments obsessed with the mandate received are also accomplices and murderers.
If governments really want to be at the service of society – for that they received the votes – they cannot be at the command of the Capital, as we have seen, because it causes illnesses, suicides and deaths in factories. To avoid this, governments should make reforms to earn more income than they have the most. Undertake tax reform that does not deceive society, help create decent jobs and maintain the well-being of citizens. That is what they should do.
As a professor of the UPV/EHU, I have often received an invitation to give the conferences. Often for musutruk or low pay. As a professor, they assumed that he had a living and stable wage. Nobody asked me about the working situation. I have not opened my mouth.
