When the criticism and the public coincide, when a film receives the applause of the viewers and the praise of the critics, it is a sign that we are before a play to take into account. An example of this is the film Soshite chichi ni naru/ Like father, like son of Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda. He won the Jury Award in Cannes, and the public awarded him his highest rating at the San Sebastian Film Festival. Kore-eda is an excellent story full of questions and reflections that put family models, relationships with children and the role of parents in the spotlight.

In general, this year we have been able to see very interesting works in the Zabaltegi pearls section. For example, Kaze tachinu/The wind rises from the hand of Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki. The father of characters such as Chichiro or Totoro takes up on this occasion a realistic story about aircraft, through his usual rhythm, his aesthetics and his beautiful images. Chilean Gloria has given us a bittersweet portrait of a woman with a strong and intense personality who wants to continue enjoying life at maturity; transgression and provocation can be subtle, delicate and beautiful; and the French Jeune et Jolie (directed by François Ozon), who has been awarded the Beste Begiradak Prize.

The Basque Film Prize was for the documentary Asier ETA biok, for friendship between former ETA prisoner Asier Aranguren and actor and director Aitor Merino. This is a courageous work because it introduces the finger into the scars that cause itching and because the two protagonists speak honestly before the camera, without avoiding the crudety, hardness and complexity of many issues.
