This work is based on two conferences on women and literature. Woolf believes that this is “a subject that generates prejudice and passions of all kinds”. The narrative is situated in two spaces: Oxbridge and London. The first (Oxford/Cambridge) and the second the library of the British Museum. The first shows the situation of women (being) facing the situation of “the security and prosperity of one sex and the poverty and insecurity of the other”. In the second part, he seeks the “truth” and finds that men have written many books about women, a series of advice and insults, which can be left quiet “unopened”. This part of the text appears on more than one occasion the feeling of anger, underlined in the edition of this translation.

Woolf claims the rent for life and the room itself to overcome it. We see it in the title, which is the main message of this work: female writers need their room, 500 pounds of rent a year and freedom to think and say. He also talks about what is the best situation for creation, and considers that any writer needs the “unity of spirit” to make literature, without men rocking on their masculinity and women being limited by their femininity. The following explains how women appear in the written literature by men and analyzes the literature written by women at different times, indicating that they have gone through different phases and which have been and can be the contributions they have made.

Jumping continuously between fiction and reality, fading emotion and reason, and intercaling the description of beauty with ironic commentary on facts. Among her conclusions, she thinks of the topic of Women and Literature, “it is unfortunate to think of her sex for anyone who writes,” attaching importance to the “unity of mind” to which we have referred earlier. He recommends his listeners and readers to write books of all kinds and themes and to reflect and dream that the possible sisters of Shakespeare may be born in them, to have an opportunity that he did not have in his day.

Consonni has brought to the Basque this well-known and referential work that seems to us to be to enjoy the literature and to awaken the consciences, with the translation of María Colera, through the funding of crowdfounding, and we sincerely thank them for this initiative. However, we have had a little sorrow with the title, because instead of choosing the literal translation – A room of one’s own – we find the translation that has been used for years in Basque culture, which Mariasun Landa used for his article in a monograph on Women and Literature (Jakin 45) in 1987, more appropriate: “Virginia Woolf’s Personal Room”, continuing this small tradition.

In conclusion, I would like to say that I have relieved this book, this time in Basque, and that I have been smiling at remembering the time when some passages came out of the book and traveled their trajectory or began to look at literature from a feminist perspective. And I was surprised, although it is such a well-known book, because I have underlined some passages, for which this work is very appropriate, because it has many memorable, already classic, noteworthy passages.
