I apologise to the reader, but contrary to my usual tendency, I see with pessimism the future of EITB following the movements that have taken place to appoint the Director-General. It has been clear for some time that public broadcasters need a deep reflection, a grand pact and a solid direction. The unimaginable transformations that are taking place in the field of communication; the social de-linkages that have taken place in recent years, especially in the Basque chain (when there is more Euskaldunes than ever before); or the economic situation that is imposing the drop in revenue (28%), could lead us to this. However, it does not appear that in the appropriate place this purpose has yet been adopted. We are following the same path that has brought us here, but conditions are much worse than before.
Only two conclusions can be drawn from the process of appointing the absolute majority of the Director-General: either the parties that have reached the agreement agree on the EITB model, or the agreement has been made without reflection on the model: one would be ratifications of the failed model. Things could be done differently, with broader pacts. In view of the enormous competition and change in the field of communication, EITB has to offer what many other media cannot contribute to achieving adherence: to be a project arising from consensus among many, the greatest value in this sense. A means built on the pact that shows that EITB belongs to all, and not a political instrument of some.
As for the appointment of the Directorate-General, the opposite has been shown: limited agreement, excessive haste, improvisation, political interest and even something that can never be accepted in a public environment: the veto of a journalist for a critical interview with lehendakari. This is not going to give strength to the new direction, but quite the opposite, at a critical time when force and support are needed. We have to give serious thought to EITB, it is too important a tool for this country to act irresponsibly or with unilateral interests.
At this point, I am forced to nullify my pessimism, giving way to the natural trend. I am convinced that what was previously wrong has been more wrong with the events of recent weeks, and I have tried to argue that. This will require even more effort from those of us who believe that EITB can contribute much more than it does to Basque society.
