Azawad
During the days I spent in Nicaragua I had many lessons that I cannot forget. One of them told me an American friend that it was absolutely dangerous for this people, having been on the news reports worldwide, to suddenly establish a silence around that country. Because aggressors never remain silent, silences are indicators that something is being prepared.
In mid-June, when spring was announcing the heat of summer, as they waited for the strong rays of the sun, which gradually opened up the pores of our body, when we thought about our lighter costumes, we found out about the name of a new African land. Azawad.
A new people far away? No! A territory close to our house. It is located precisely in the north-west of Mali, where the French colonizers have disappeared from the maps, but have not been able to pull out of the heart of the nomad city of Tuareg, the land that they have claimed over and over again.
Following the usual routines, Western media told us a lot of lies with half-truths. The soldiers who claimed the independence of the people of Azawad, after losing their heads, did not have the request, passing it through a proklama or extending the spectrum of the fundamentalist Islamists as they do many times. However, they have made it clear that the only objective of the Tuareg soldiers themselves who have revolted is to recover their territory.
The Sahara is the largest desert in the world. Many nomadic peoples have lived in it for centuries, despite their journeys, each of them has had its location, its natural accommodation, its homeland. There we have the Western Sahara, a land of the itinerant group known as The Sons of the Clouds.
Not everything can be done in camel. The Tuareg people, the last tramp of the endless territory, have their territory in Mali, north of Algeria, Niger. Now, however, only the independence in which the neighbour of Mali lives is proclaimed.
The nomadic Tuareg peoples are Muslims, but they follow the laws they have kept for a long time, they use laws older than the arrival of Muslims to organize their lives, they do not follow the Saharawi law of Koranic origin.
Men and women are not equal, but women are important in this type of society, do not live outside society, participate effectively in the organization of the people, are part of decisive community assemblies, express their opinions in the public and private space.
A married woman can apply for divorce – separation from her partner – she must not wear hijab or scarf to cover her head. A few years ago a Sahrawi told us that when his problem is solved “the world will have a lesser wound and a house more”.
Unfortunately, the world is aware of one more bleeding wound in the Maghreb area. Western pacifist democrats, at a time when silence has been total, have been preparing the attack on Azawad, this time with the help of African leaders.
Last November, France forced the West African Economic Association (ECOWAS), which brings together 15 nations, to send troops. This association has agreed to send 3,600 soldiers to Azawad by April.
Members of the Azawad liberation movement said in the spring: “If they attack us they will know hell.”
