On February 21, five hooded girls entered an Orthodox Church to demand Our Lady, in punk tone, the overthrow of Putin. For this reason, three of the alleged members of the organization have been detained and sentenced to two years ' imprisonment in Russia. This is the case of Pussy Riot, which has become so popular in recent months.
Unfortunately, these Russian women have been made by this latest famous bill and we have been able to read and see several interviews, reports and news about them. Not only that, social media has been filled with initiatives, photos and shouts that claim the freedom of Pussy Riot. Well, and Madonna and Red Hot Chili Peppers and Kasparov and Amnesty International -- they've also been in your favor.
I already knew the group before, as they have done many other activities besides the latter. I knew them from the beginning because they have made it very clear that they were a group feminist, because I knew that their anti-patriarchal discourse was associated with the socio-political situation that they live in Russia and conveyed a very interesting message of resistance, as we have historically done by the feminists that I knew, who have used a very creative way of spreading that message.
And call me suspicious, because I'll be, but I knew those radical, punk feminist Pussy Riot, I've been shocked by the support they've received and they're getting. I mean, today it's rare for any feminist to receive this kind of plural support. Of course, my astonishment has an explanation. I mean, I realized right away that her feminist identity appeared in very little news. They immediately changed the word “feminist” to “feminine group” or the inspired punk feminist group Riot Grrrl to a simple punk group against Putin.
And so I see that those neutral arguments of support are freedom of expression, the right to secularism, the criticism of the relationship between church and power, the revenge of Putin's government ... And I'm not willing, because if Pussy Riot is something, it's a feminist group, and even more so, the women who form Pussy Riot are women, and we shouldn't forget that when women occupy public space and adopt behaviors that don't really belong to our femininity, condemnation doubles.
So, for those of us who ask for Pussy Riot’s freedom, let us be clear who and what we are asking for freedom.
