3 August (11 days from Jazzaldia de Donostia), terrace of the bar Itzurun de Zumaia (31 kilometers from Kursaal). Honoring Basque musicians, they offered mythical and little-known songs, starting to dusk.
It was a nighttime leisure time. The terrace was lying down, but people walked with their legs extended and listened with some relaxation. We made a hole in the staircase, trying to get into that intimate and welcoming atmosphere. What strength reigned in that direct one! Eyes and ears, open pores, sounds and words reached the belly, in a stimulus of emotions. Ortega gathered us with his eyes, sang to each of us. Salvador brought his well-known melodies into the waters of jazz.
In the end, just as they try to do with KantaginJazz in each village, they invited a zumaiar musician to play with them: Saxophonist Julen Izarra; and fortune wanted percussionist Luis Camino to settle in the place. After playing a couple of pieces together, it was announced keeping the tone of humor that had been placed among the songs throughout the concert: “This is a drink for us, but we have to do it”, “yes, done as soon as possible”... improvise. They performed the song “Lau teilatu” among the four, by points, first the saxo walked to the letter, then the piano played free and finally the voice was released. It was a moment of magic, and he put us in a game, trying to guess where the melodies and rhythms were going.
Since then, we have discussed with each other whether jazz is ungrateful, at least 11 days and 31 kilometers from Jazzaldia. Musicians move masses in other styles. That is how it will be, but the energy that this action had, the connection between the person and the person, was unique.
