At the end of 1995, all gay and lesbian groups in the State demonstrated in Madrid, about to finish the legislature, to demand that the Government of Felipe González fulfill its campaign promise: to make the law of couple effective. The last meeting to set out the details of the call took place at the EHGAM headquarters in Bilbao, where, among others, Pedro Zerolo (current councillor in the City Council of Madrid and Secretary of Relations with Social Movements and NGOs of the PSOE) was present as president of an association. At the meeting, on the proposal of EHGAM, it was agreed that the title of the document should be against homophobia, and in the first point it was decided that instead of the law of couple, we should demand the right to marry. Zerolo is known because, in addition to his charges, he presents himself as a precursor of same-sex weddings. Few know, however, that at that meeting he strongly opposed the proclamation of marriage, as well as the slogan against homophobia itself, since in Spain (sic) there was no homophobia.
Rarely have I told this story in public, but today it comes to the point. And that is that we of Ehgam, each year together with the golden trio, give the “prize” to a spartine of rag to a person or institution that has in some way expressed homophobia. It is undeniable that there is homophobia in our world, although not as hard as in many other parts of the world. I recognise, however, that this year we have had problems finding a significant candidate. A couple of months ago, we didn't have a name in our head. On one occasion, however, they started piling us up. First, the bishop of Alcalá made all the merits, for what he said in TVE, which sent us to hell to all homosexuals. But we are fed up with giving so many times the hug to the ecclesiastics and men, so we preferred to look for another. Soon after, in Intereconomics, in addition to the attacks on liberties of all kinds, pearls of great beauty were thrown over homosexuality, in defense of the bishop. When we thought we had a candidate, then the minister hit and broke the marks, instead of insulting – insults, in short, are words and the wind leads them – because he published facts: The subject of Education for Citizenship, besides changing its name, has also changed from being, suppressing, among other things, the part that condemned homophobia and any reference to affective freedoms.
