Curious ways to spread the Basque
This has just been read: “The Vice-Ministry of Linguistic Policy of the Department of Culture of the Basque Government and the Navarro Institute of the Euskera Euskarabidea of the Department of Education of the Government of Navarra will sign a specific cooperation agreement. This agreement will enhance cooperation between the two signatory entities in certain aspects related to the Basque Country.”
I confess that, with a little touch, I found the vascophony collaboration between our two institutions quite “surprising”. Their practice does not give rise to great hopes. With my prejudices, I started looking for the keys in the ad. The first came at once: “This collaboration is technical.” Of course, no smell of political agreement. The second, a little later: “Avoid duplication and expense”. I began to understand better and better. Cooperation also, of course, to reduce costs. And after a while I found the third key, which in the list of areas of the convention was as follows: “International dissemination programs for Euskera and readers in Euskera in foreign universities”.
When I saw him, I remembered immediately: “That must be,” that is what has driven the Navarre authorities – and perhaps others too – to cooperation. Remove the Basque from here, hear, and take him abroad as far as possible. Like toxic waste. Take the Basque country to Germany (Volkswagen's friends may need some Basque), to the United States, to Suriname, to India or to Uganda. Perhaps in the fantasies of the Navarran leaders it can be argued that the dialects and languages of the peoples can be transported as units. The Basque of Burunda to Asia, the Baztan to Argentina… and the batua, of course. If there is a priority, it would be a priority. Take the unified Basque remotely, please, and spread it internationally, if possible in small pieces, without asking for anything in return.
I believe, therefore, that I understood the basis of the convention, but I was left with a doubt: When he says “Readers in Basque at foreign university”, what does it mean? Will they seek in foreign universities people who read in Euskera, or, on the contrary, will they disseminate and disperse in foreign universities students – and professors – with an almost criminal and dangerous tendency to read in Euskera?
