Asbestos, a carcinogenic mineral that has been used in many companies, not only kills in Italy, where it has been an exemplary ruling against those responsible. Asbestos also kills companies in the Basque Country. Hundreds of workers will die in their day by coming into contact with this mineral. So far this year, there are already three people dead. The last two weeks, José Ignacio González, a 54-year-old worker who worked in the company Tubes Reunidos de Amurrio, reported Interior. So far this year, 71 people in the Basque Country have lost their lives to this type of cancer.

However, the judicial action against these murders is not the same in Euskal Herria as in Italy. Prosecutors and judges would have to take full account of the judgment that has been delivered in Italy. And the families of the Basque Country affected by asbestos, such as the Association of Asbestos Victims (ASVIAME), should take advantage of this situation to continue to denounce and bring to court those responsible for the removal of criminal and civil responsibilities. The jury in Turin has sentenced the leaders of the company Eternit, the multinational that produced asbestos cement in Italy, to 16 years in prison. Those responsible caused an environmental disaster and did not comply with the conditions of safety at work. This resulted in the deaths of 2,300 people, according to the jury, resulting in a total of 665 cases. The convicts have tried to break the sentence with compensation of EUR 18 million, an amount to which the victims have refused to pay.
