We've stayed with Josetxo Apezetxea in Elizondo, the building they bought a few years ago. They have two headquarters, one in Elizondo and the other in Lesaka. Unlike Euskalerria Irratia, they are licensed to issue. In Zugarramurdi, Urdax, Baztan, Bertizarana, Malerreka and Cinco Villas the radio is heard. Last year it turned 30.

Radio was founded in 1981, when free radios were at the mouthpiece. The project initiated by the volunteers gained a more “professional” tone over the years and the contracted staff started to manage the radio. It is currently managed by Xorroxin Kultur Elkartea. It still maintains the footprints of free radios and radio has no direction, decisions are made in an assembly way. Eight people currently work, although not all day long.

We asked the Priestess how the year 2012 comes with the news of the Government of Navarra and the economic crisis: “We’re very happy because somehow we’re going to maintain intent.” Getting EUR zero from the government will not put the radio, which is around 10% of the budget at risk. The Basque Government receives more than twice as much, although it remains to be seen what they are going to receive this year, as the Basque Government has reduced its aid bag by 11%. The other source of revenue is the partners, some 140, with an annual fee of EUR 30. There would be a campaign to get more partners, but as long as the other successful radio support campaign, “Cow shit,” is underway, they won’t get to the other. Advertising is the main source of revenue, with a good response so far and with a budget close to 40% of the total. The Baztan City Hall and the mancommunities of Cinco Villas and Malerreka also work together.

For Xorroxin Irratia, 2012 doesn't look bad, but they know they can't sleep: "The government is not going to give anything, the government is going to fall. Cuts will come to people and city halls and we don’t know if we can keep advertising revenue.”
